76 STUDENTS SEEKING SUCCESS BY THE NUMBERS

Feb. 16, 2004 – Seventy-six pupils from St. Thomas and St. John will put their skills in algebra, geometry, probability and statistics to the test when they meet on Feb. 26 for the annual district Mathcounts competition.
The event, sponsored by Rotary Club of St. Thomas II, will take place at Palms Court Harborview Hotel.
The students, from 12 public and private junior high, middle and elementary schools, will compete individually and on school teams in oral and written matches, according to an Education Department release.
The participating schools are Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, All Saints Cathedral School, Antilles School, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Joseph Gomez Elementary School, Julius E. Sprauve School, Leonard Dober Elementary School, Montessori School, Peace Corps Elementary School, Pine Peace School, Sts. Peter and Paul School and Ulla Muller Elementary School.
The four mathletes with the highest individual scores will advance to the territorywide competition, going up against their St. Croix district counterparts on March 26.
Mathcounts, a nationwide program aimed at developing mathematical skills in middle school students, was founded 21 yeats ago by the CNA Foundation, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
