THOUSANDS OF OUTDATED ITEMS FOUND ON SHELVES

Licensing and Consumer Affairs Department inspectors have found thousands of outdated Nabisco brand products on store shelves in the territory in an ongoing investigation.
According to a release, the department acted on a tip from a consumer and found 2,258 outdated Nabisco snack products on store shelves.
On St. John, three stores were found to be carrying a total of 1,226 out-of-date items. On St. Thomas, 858 outdated products were found at seven stores. On St. Croix, to date 174 outdated Nabisco items have been found at eight stores, with the investigation on that island.
Licensing and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Andrew Rutnik said fines on the violations found thus far are estimated at upwards of $80,000.
Rutnik said the investigation also found 465 more out-of-date products in Nabisco storerooms on St. Thomas and St. John. He termed the operation the "tip of the iceberg" in the department's enforcement efforts.
He said he had no explanation for the large number of outdated products but said the department will continue the probe.
