PROPERTY TAX DEADLINE EXTENDED
Nov. 21, 2001 Property tax payers get a break on their payment date thanks to a move by Gov. Charles Turnbull.
The governor announced Tuesday that property tax payments are now due by Nov. 31. They were originally due Aug. 31.
If they are not paid by Dec. 31, they will be considered delinquent.
The last day for filing for an appeal is Jan. 15, 2002.
Turnbull said in a news release that the tax bills were not sent out until July 25, which did not give taxpayers sufficient time to pay.
UVI HOLDS OPEN HOUSE
The University of the Virgin Islands will hold an open house for high school seniors, juniors, parents, and high school officials on Dec. 1 at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center in St. Thomas. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"The community is also invited," said Rosenid Hernandez-Badia, a biology professor who is helping to organize the event.
She said that many people do not know all that UVI has to offer. For example, students hoping to study medicine can start their academic careers at UVI before transferring to a mainland school.
Other similar study courses are also available for engineers. The school also has a national student exchange.
The open house includes information about admissions, financial aid, campus housing, athletics, and freshman support services.
"And we'll do some science experiments," Hernandez-Badia said.
Faculty, staff and students will be on hand to meet visitors.
Refreshments will be served.
For more information, call 693-1383.
