Firearm Recovered During Search; Two Arrested at Mt. Pleasant Project

Police arrested two people early Wednesday on St. Croix after finding a firearm and ammunition during a search for a suspect in an assault and robbery case, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau and Special Operations Bureau executed a search warrant and arrest warrant for Dreadisha Peguero around 3:45 a.m. at an apartment in the Mt. Pleasant Project. During the search, officers found a firearm and two magazines containing ammunition. Police said both Peguero and Ian Benjamin Jr., who was inside the apartment, denied owning the weapon.

Peguero and Benjamin, both 23, were taken to the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station, advised of their rights, and arrested for carrying a firearm openly or concealed. Bail was set at $50,000, police said.

Police said both were unable to post bail and were remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending their advice of rights hearing Thursday in Superior Court.
