Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. brought more than just a listening ear to the Adrian Senior Center on Thursday — he brought lunch. Cooking and sharing a meal with senior residents, the governor heard firsthand about their challenges, Government House announced.
Joined by Human Services Department Commissioner Averil George and St. John Administrator Shikima Jones-Sprauve, Bryan engaged with the seniors and reinforced his administration’s commitment to improving services for the island’s aging population, according to the press release.
One of the main concerns raised was the need for better public transportation, particularly reliable VITRAN service to the Loredon Lorence Boynes Sr. Ferry Dock in Cruz Bay. In response, Bryan assured residents that the Public Works Department is already working on solutions, including acquiring smaller VITRAN buses better suited for the island’s narrow and congested streets, the press release stated.
“Growing up in Savan with my grandmother, I learned early on the value of our elders,” Bryan said. “Seniors hold our history, wisdom, and culture. We have a responsibility to ensure they enjoy the best quality of life possible. That includes making sure public transportation works for them, not against them.”
