The Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands hosted scores of guests at an open house last week.

In addition to representatives from a number of governmental agencies, community members attended and interacted with the DRCVIโ€™s members and other advocate agencies to learn about support services available to them.

Under the theme โ€œBuilding Bridges: Connecting Resources, Empowering Lives,โ€ the Disability Rights Center provided ways for individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, and stakeholders to address the needs of the disability community and shared resources to promote empowerment and independence.

Resources included attendees from Island Therapy Solutions, Frederiksted Health Care, Inc., the University of the Virgin Islands, the V.I. Health Department, V.I. Education, V.I. Human Services, V.I. Labor, the YAG Foundation, Our Town Frederiksted, Rotary Club, Lutheran Social Services of the V.I., and the Veteran Administrationโ€™s Center.

โ€œThe open house was a resounding success and we hope to do the same on St. Thomas. We are touched by the communityโ€™s outpouring of support in our efforts to advance the rights of individuals with disabilities,โ€ Angus Drigo, DRCVIโ€™s executive director, said.

The mission of the Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands is to advance the rights of persons with disabilities, support and empower families and provide training and information that promote the overall health and educational development of children and youth, according to its website.

Keeping our community informed is our top priority.
