On Dec. 16, 2024, the Economic Crimes Unit initiated an investigation into a complaint filed by The Home Depot, the V.I. Police Department reported.
The investigation revealed that a former employee identified as Sheba Young was seen on surveillance exiting The Home Depot store with a Whirlpool refrigerator valued at $1,288, knowing that she did not pay for the item nor did anyone else. Young then persuaded a co-worker to assist in loading the refrigerator into an accomplice’s truck, the police report stated.
As a result of this investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Young.
On Friday, detectives from the ECU served 48-year-old Young the arrest warrant, advised her of her rights, and placed her under arrest without incident. Young was transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station, where she was subsequently booked and charged with grand larceny, embezzlement by employee, and conspiracy, according to the report.
Based on the incident, bail was set at $35,000. Unable to post bail, Young was remanded to the John A. Bell Adult Correction Facility pending her advice of rights hearing scheduled for Monday at the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.
