In commemoration of this year’s Law Day, the Virgin Islands Bar Foundation conducted its first annual Law Day School presentations from May 3 through May 29. During the Law Day School presentations, the foundation – with the support of volunteer members of the V.I. Bar, visited over 15 schools throughout the territory.
Attorneys provided age-appropriate instruction in the elementary, junior high/middle and high schools about the theme of Law Day 2019, which focused on First Amendment Freedoms, particularly Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press, and their importance to maintaining a free society.
The presentations involved classroom discussions and activities intended to enhance the students’ understanding of how society has been and continues to be impacted by these freedoms.
The participating schools were Eudora Kean High School, Sts. Peter and Paul School, St. Thomas Seventh-day Adventist School, Charlotte Amalie High School, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and Yvonne Milliner Bowsky Elementary School on St. Thomas. On St. Croix the schools were St. Croix Central High School, St. Croix Educational Complex, Elena Christian Junior High School, St. Croix Seventh-day Activist School, Lew Muckle Elementary School and Good Hope Country Day School.
