June 16, 2006 — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Cpl. Sheila Middleton and Lt. Gregory A. Bennerson, the V.I. Police Department announced Friday.
Middleton will lie in state at Government House on Monday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. A second viewing will take place at Speak the Word Ministries in Peter's Rest on Tuesday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., immediately followed by the funeral services at the same location. Interment will be at the Kingshill cemetery.
Bennerson will lie in state at Government House on Tuesday, June 20, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will held at St. Patrick's Church in Frederiksted on Wednesday, June 21, with viewing at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Frederiksted cemetery.
The Government House viewings are open to the public. Police Commissioner Elton Lewis encouraged the public to attend and pay homage to Middleton and Bennerson, according to a release issued by the department.
Middleton and Bennerson died within hours of each other from health-related ailments on June 13. Middleton suffered a heart attack after not feeling well for a few days, while Bennerson died from complications due to asthma.
Middleton was the supervisor of the St. Croix Crime Prevention Unit, the head of the DARE program and a Neighborhood Watch organizer.
Bennerson was the supervisor of the St. Croix Investigation Bureau, a member of several community organizations and an accomplished steel pan player.
