Schneider Regional to Host Gubernatorial Forum in October

Sept. 28, 2006 — All three candidates for governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands have agreed to participate in a gubernatorial forum next Wednesday evening to discuss health care in the territory, according to a release issued by Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The forum will be held at the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute auditorium from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, and will be shown live on WTJX-TV public television.
According to the release, the forum was the idea of several SRMC employees who felt that health care was not being adequately addressed in the election campaign.
"This is an excellent opportunity to bring health care to the forefront of the campaign and impress candidates that our medical center employees take elections seriously," SRMC President and CEO Rodney E. Miller Sr. said.
Registered Nurse Merla Kimball, who leads the SRMC committee that is organizing the event, said hospital employees are submitting their health care questions in writing this week, which will be posed to gubernatorial candidates John deJongh, Kenneth Mapp, and Sen. Adlah Foncie Donastorg.
Some of the questions already submitted include what the candidates plan to do about medical care for the growing uninsured population, the elderly, disabled and the homeless.
