June 17, 2004 – Seventy youths from around the Caribbean and as far away as Long Beach, Calif., are participating in the annual Scotiabank Caribbean International Optimist Regatta this week in the waters off St. Thomas.
The regatta is being hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club and co-presented by the V.I. Sailing Association. The youths were in the water Thursday practicing in their 8-foot, one-person, sailing dinghies. Races are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning.
According to spokesperson Karen Rice, the regatta will culminate with an awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
Sailing clinics were held at the yacht club earlier this week for the youngsters, ages 7 to 15. They will be competing in four age and experience categories.
