U.S.V.I. Competes for Davis Cup at Tobago
The Virgin Islands played the Bahamas on Monday. At No. 1 singles, Brian Oldfield played Marvin Rolle who has an ITF ranking of 1716 and held his own in the first set but was broken once and lost the first set 6-3. In the second set, Brian played well but was broken twice and lost the set 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Kris Elien played Rodney Carey. Unfortunately, Kris got off to a slow start and was broken in the first and seventh games, loosing the first set 6-2. In the second set, he played much better. Kris was broken in the sixth game falling to a 4-2 deficit. He held serve to stay in the match at 5-3 and broke his opponent’s next serve to get back on serve at 5-4. Unfortunately he was unable to hold his serve loosing the set 6-4.
Nick Bass and Alric Plasket represented the U.S.V.I. in Match No. 3, doubles. Their opponents were Marvin Rolle and Rodney Carey. The V.I. team got off to a slow start, loosing the first set 6-1. The second set was much more interesting as we lost the first four games. We then won the next three games to get back to 3-4. We then held serve to get to 4-5. However, the opponent was able to serve out the set winning 4-6.
Therefore we lost the tie 0-3. However, it should be noted that the V.I. is competing at zone three level, which has a high level of play. However, it is worth noting that our players played with heart and performed very well. Team Captain, Stan Myrie-G is proud of the effort and energy put forth by the players and looks forward to coaching them throughout this Davis Cup 2012 competition.
The V.I.’s next opponent will be Costa Rica.
