'Wing King' Contest Will Benefit Animal Welfare Center

A charity fundraiser to see who can cook up the best chicken wings will be held June 17, Father's Day, to support the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center.

The Wing King Chicken Wing Cooking Contest will be held at Ziggy's Island Market on St. Croix's east end.

All the donations, raffle ticket sales, food profits, and contest entry fees will be donated to the Animal Welfare Center, as will a portion of beverage sales, according to the Welfare Center.

The event will kickoff at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to come participate in preparing or sampling St. Croix's most delicious chicken wings. The entry fee to compete is $25. There will be three categories: “Classic Caribbean Flavor,” “No Ordinary Wing,” and “Hot-Diggity! Deh is Hot!”

Awards and prizes will be given out for winners in each category. A People’s Choice Award will also be given out for ‘Best of Show’ and the winner of the People’s Choice will receive awards and the title of Wing King of St.Croix.

Those interested in entering the competition can register at Ziggy's Market any time before the cookoff starts.

Music will be provided by DJ Don Juan, who will be emceeing the event and highlighting the afternoon's musical entertainment.

There will be plenty of wings to eat. The Dogging for Dollars Hot Dog Cart also will be on site and proprietor John Cianci will offer several types of hot dogs and his famous pulled pork barbecue. Cianci will even have some treats for any four legged customers, according to the Welfare Center.

There will also be a bake sale with sweet treats and drink specials all afternoon in Ziggy's Island Market’s Libation Station Bar.

Raffle winners will be announced at the culmination of the contest. There will be a "Chinese raffle" of donated items as well as a 50/50 Raffle. Tickets for the 50/50 Raffle will cost $3 each or 2 for $5 and are available now at Ziggy’s.

All donations are tax deductible and the beneficiaries of the event will provide a 501-c charity letter. Sponsors will receive credit on Ziggy's website, Facebook page, and on all signs posted at Ziggy's prior to and during the event. Sponsors also will be acknowledged on radio promotions prior to the event.
