FLIGHTS TO LINK FREDERIKSTED, CHARLOTTE AMALIE

May 8, 2003 – For the first time in decades, Frederiksted on St. Croix and Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas will be linked directly by daily seaplane service — beginning May 14, when Seaborne Airlines begins two round-trip flights per day between the two ports.
The flights will be a welcome boon for senators traveling from St. Thomas for meetings at the Legislature chambers in Frederiksted. It also is hoped that leisure travelers visiting St. Thomas will take advantage of the convenient flights to explore historic Frederiksted on St. Croix's western shore.
Initially there will be a total of four flights per day, two in each direction, according to Omer ErSelcuk, Seaborne chief marketing officer. "The flights are timed to provide convenient morning and afternoon departures for business and leisure travelers," ErSelcuk said, and "for those who live and do business on the beautiful west end of St. Croix."
The inaugural flight is to depart the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 8:45 a.m. on May 14, with arrival in Frederiksted scheduled for 9:15 a.m. The return flight is to depart at 9:30 a.m and arrive on St. Thomas at 10 a.m.
The afternoon southbound flight will depart St. Thomas at 3 p.m. and arrive in Frederiksted at 3:30 p.m. The return flight will depart at 3:45 p.m. and arrive back in Charlotte Amalie at 4:15 p.m.
"While we're starting with only four daily flights to and from St. Thomas," ErSelcuk said, "as demand builds, more service will be added, including earlier and later flights." He said he hopes later this summer to have direct flights between Frederiksted and Old San Juan in Puerto Rico, too.
"It is our desire to assist in the redevelopment of Frederiksted by greatly improving access via convenient and hassle-free seaplane service," he said.
Seaplane service to Frederiksted "opens up a myriad of day-trip options for those on St. Thomas who wish to spend a day on St. Croix's exotic and lush West End," ErSelcuk said.
"Within close reach are white sand beaches and tranquil blue waters, including Sandy Point, which is ranked as one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean."
ErSelcuk also touted other St. Croix West End attractions that he said will suddenly become readily accessible to folks on St. Thomas, thanks to Seaborne's new service:
– Some of the territory's finest restaurants.
– Great scuba diving off the Frederiksted Pier.
– Affordable watersports activities and tropical libations at laid-back beach bars.
– Hikes and tours through rambling ruins.
– Museums and restored greathouses, including Sprat Hall, one of the oldest plantations in the territory.
– Horseback riding and biking in the Crucian rainforest.
– The beer-drinking (non-alcoholic nowadays) pigs at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club.
