All consumers, merchants and businesses are notified that effective 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, a price freeze and restricted sale order will be in effect for the territory of the Virgin Islands. The price freeze is effective as a result of the territory presently being under a tropical storm watch. It has been determined that there is the likelihood of expected winds and rains to have an effect on weather conditions throughout the territory on Wednesday and Thursday from Tropical Storm Issac, according to a press release issued Tuesday by DLCA.

DLCA reminds all merchants and businesses that part of its mission is to assist and protect consumers. “As we remain in the heart of the hurricane season, businesses are advised to comply with orders issued by the department to avoid being assessed penalties for acts of price gouging and other unfair business practices," said Commissioner Wayne Biggs.

Prices are frozen at existing levels on all items of food, general supplies, and services. Additionally, all items of food, and general supplies, whether locally produced or imported, are restricted from being exported or sold outside of the territory. Merchants are also forbidden to alter the ordinary delivery methods, terms, discounts, concessions or methods of payment. The sale price shall not be higher than the fixed price. All merchants are also forbidden from refusing to accept Virgin Islands government vouchers during the emergency period.

These measures are being instituted to protect the public’s welfare during the emergency period and to prevent speculative practices related to articles of food, and general supplies and services, which are essential during the recovery period.
