Banking and Insurance Expands Consumer Assistance Programs

The Division of Banking and Insurance’s consumer protection programs available to the Virgin Islands community will be expanded through the Affordable Care Act Consumer Assistance Program, which helps Virgin Islands’ consumers to navigate their health insurance concerns.  The program is federally funded through a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.
The program has placed consumer protection officers at the Division of Banking and Insurance offices in each district, specifically to assist consumers with health insurance enrollment and in investigating issues they may be having with their health insurance providers.  The consumer protection officers will also provide outreach and education, with a focus on an insurance consumer’s rights and responsibilities pertaining to health plans and health insurance coverage, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Division of Banking and Insurance, Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
Implementation of the program advances the territory’s healthcare reform efforts, which seek to improve healthcare access and delivery of services to Virgin Islanders.
Persons needing assistance from the consumer protection officers in resolving health insurance related matters are asked to contact the Division of Banking and Insurance Offices at 774-2991 for the St. Thomas-St. John District or 773-6459 on St. Croix.  Inquiries for assistance to resolve health insurance related matters can also be e-mailed to consumerassistance@lgo-vi.gov.
For more information on the Consumer Assistance Program, contact Glendina Matthew, assistant director for the Division of Banking and Insurance, at 773-6459.
