Screening of the Film “Cyrano de Bergerac” Set for April 15: A showing of the film “Cyrano de Bergerac” is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, in Chase Auditorium (Business 110) on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Admission is $1. The screening is sponsored by The Modern Languages Area of UVI’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, with the patronage of the Honorary French Consul. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m.
St. Thomas Student Employee Appreciation Week Continues Through April 17: April 11-17 is Student Employee Appreciation Week on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Activities begin with “Words of Appreciation Day” on Monday, April 12, when UVI students, faculty and staff are encouraged to individually recognize student workers. The week also includes a Career Services Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, at Roupp House, a workshop on Etiquette in the Workplace from 1-2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, in the Teacher Education Building, Room 211, and a Social Night with Karaoke from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16, at the Dining Pavilion. The week’s highlight will be the presentation of student employee awards and the announcement of the 2010 Student Employee of the Year at a 12:15 p.m. ceremony on Thursday, April 15, in the Dining Pavilion.

UVI Observing National Library Week on St. Thomas Campus: UVI continues its observance of National Library Week – which officially runs from April 11-17 – with a variety of activities on the St. Thomas campus. Events are sponsored by the Information and Technology Services Area.

National Library Week Events and Activities include: All Week: April 11 – 17: Fine Amnesty Week – no fines for returning books that are overdue. Monday, April 12: Library Fest, with food, music, poetry and games from noon to 3 p.m. – at the Paiewonsky Library. Tuesday, April 13: Library Workers Appreciation Day – show some love to your library workers. Wednesday, April 14: Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – sponsored by the UVI Literary Club. Wednesday, April 14: A Scavenger Hunt at 10:30 a.m. – at the Paiewonsky Library.Thursday, April 15: A Scavenger Hunt at 2:30 p.m. – at the Paiewonsky Library. Friday, April 16: Library Flair Day.
St. Croix Intramural Basketball Championship Rescheduled to April 14: The 2010 championship game of the St. Croix Intramural Basketball League has been rescheduled to 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14. Kingdom Come will take on On da Rock in the matchup. St. Croix campus Intramural Coach Bruce Wray encourages the UVI community to come out and support the intramural athletes.

UVI Bookstores Surveying Students; Responses Sought Before April 16: The University of the Virgin Islands Bookstores on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are asking students to participate in a survey designed to help the stores improve their quality of service and to better serve students. The survey is available to students in two formats – a PDF form linked from the Bookstore section of the UVI Web site and a form that can be completed and submitted online. Students who print, complete and deliver the PDF form to either the St. Croix or St. Thomas Bookstore before April 16, will receive a free token of appreciation. UVI Concert Choir to Perform Spring Concert April 18 on St. Thomas: The UVI Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Lorna Young-Wright, will present a Spring Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. They may be purchased at the UVI Bookstore, the Humanities Division Office or from choir members.

Student Art and Design Show Opens April 19 on St. Croix Campus: Works by 12 UVI students enrolled in the Basic Design (Art 117) course will be featured at a show that opens on Monday, April 19, at the St. Croix campus library. The show will include works created for the next Caribbean Writer journal, labyrinth books with surprise endings, beautiful object studies and abstractions. The student artists and Professor Cynthia Hatfield will be on hand from 7:30-9 p.m. for the opening party, which will include refreshments. Art 117 is a three-credit course and is the first in a series of studio art classes offered on UVI’s St. Croix campus. The course, which Prof. Hatfield will teach again during the fall semester, serves as a beginning along the path toward a possible humanities minor in the visual arts. Drawing skills are not required.

A slide presentation offering a look at some of the works to be featured in the show is available from this slide show link. The show will continue at the library through April 26. The library, located in the Evans Center, is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays.
Joneisa Smith Crowned Miss UVI for 2010; Photo Featured on UVI Today: Congratulations to Joneisa Smith, who was crowned Miss UVI in the university’s 30th Annual Ambassadorial Pageant on Saturday, April 3, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. This year’s theme was “Collective Aspirations … Colossal Achievements.” Other contestants in the pageant were Royette Carriere and Indira Turney. A photo from the pageant is featured on the UVI Today photo blog, available from the UVI home page and uvi.edu.
Academic Awards Program Set for April 24 on St. Croix: The UVI’s St. Croix Campus will host the 36th Annual Academic Awards Program at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. St. Thomas Campus Academic Awards Ceremony Set for April 25: The Academic Awards Ceremony for UVI’s St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, in the Sports and Fitness Center. For more information, contact Dr. Kimarie Engerman at 693-1277.
Spring Semester Final Exams Scheduled for May 3 through May 8: UVI’s final exams for Spring Semester 2010 will be held from Monday, May 3, through Saturday, May 8. The complete final exam schedule is available from the Academics section of the UVI Web site – uvi.edu.
