The 27th annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off will be held Sunday, Aug. 21, at Brewers Beach. Come join the fun for a day of live music, dancing, a Coast Guard rescue demonstration and fly-by, games for children and adults, and lots of spicy chili on the beach. Coors Light, Coca-Cola products and water will be available as well as Domino’s Pizza slices and collectible event T-shirts. Large prize raffle tickets can be purchased prior to the event (winners do not have to be present to win). Be cool, don’t bring a cooler to this fundraiser for local charities.
Convenient parking in the Reichhold Center lot will be available for a nominal donation. There is access by boat, but jet skis are prohibited. Trophies will be awarded to the top ten chili cooks and top three vegetarian chili cooks. Awards for showmanship will be given to the top three large and small groups. One winner will be sent to represent the Virgin Pod at the national cook-off in Terlingua, Texas. Winners will receive prizes generously donated by local businesses. A $25 entry fee per cook includes 10×10 spot on the beach, a case of Coors Light, a goody bag, 10 pounds of free meat to cook at the event, an event T-shirt, tasting supplies and dinner for two at the cook’s BBQ.
More than 5,000 attendees and up to 50 cooks are expected. Those who want to participate can still help with this huge event. Volunteers are needed throughout the day, including bar attendants, T-shirt and ticket sales and more. All proceeds are donated to local charities.
