After a year’s absence from the local scene, Interfaith Coalition of St. Croix has announced the revival of their popular movie night series now known as the Interfaith Coalition Multi-Cultural Film Series. The film series will feature 10 very intriguing and thought provoking films and documentaries to be shown each month, beginning Saturday, May 18. Some of the films will tell stories of spiritual renewal while others will call attention to the incredible challenges we face as a global community.
The debut film of the series is the critically acclaimed documentary, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” which chronicles the peace movement that led to the resolution of the civil war that had ravaged the country of Liberia, West Africa. The leader of the peace movement, social worker Leymah Gbowee, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, as did the newly- elected president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Upcoming films featured in the series will include: "The Way" – a poignant tale of an American doctor who travels to France to collect the remains of his son who was killed during a storm in the Pyrenees Mountains while making a pilgrimage known as "The Way of St. James." Upon his arrival in France, he decides to honor his son by completing the pilgrimage and experiences a spiritual reawakening of his own. "The Interrupters" is a moving documentary that follows a group of individuals dedicated to ‘interrupting’ violence among the youth of Chicago, Illinois, and “Marley” is a documentary of the life, music and legacy of the late Bob Marley and his impact on music history.
These and six other films have been chosen for their universal qualities and for their power to educate, inspire and uplift people from all walks of life. The film series is jointly supported by a grant from the V.I. Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
