UVI to Host Free Screenings of 'The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration'

Nov. 11, 2008 - Virgin Islanders can learn how to use the seven principles of Kwanzaa 365 days a year. The V.I. premiere of the film "The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration" will be held on Nov. 14 and 15, on St. Thomas and St. Croix, respectively. Narrated by Poet Laureate Maya Angelou, the film is a timely illumination on why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are so important to African-Americans today.
The St. Croix screening will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., in the Great Hall of the University of the Virgin Islands.
M.K. Asante Jr., a 25-year-old Morgan State University professor, is the director of the film and will be the keynote speaker at the events. He will also lead a question and answer segment following each screening and will be available to sign books. Asante will also share the experiences and perspectives of his other published works.
Admission to all events is free. For more information, call 473-6659 or e-mail HabariGaniVI@gmail.com.
