UVI Documentary ‘The Road to Home’

The University of the Virgin Islands will screen a free documentary about the fight for freedom in West Papua. “The Road to Home” (2015) is a feature length documentary about the West Papua independence leader Benny Wenda, who has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. West Papua is a part of Indonesia. It won the Best Documentary Feature Award at the Amsterdam Film Festival in 2016. Filmed over a two-year period, it provides an exclusive insight into the life and times of this freedom fighter and his tireless struggle to liberate his people from Indonesian colonial rule. Over 500,000 civilians have been killed in a genocide against the indigenous population. Thousands more have been raped, tortured, imprisoned or ‘disappeared’ after being detained. Basic human rights such as freedom of speech are denied and Papuans live in a constant state of fear and intimidation.
