TURNBULL SIGNS BILL AUTHORIZING BORROWING

Gov. Charles W. Turnbull on Monday signed into law the measure giving him power to shift funds to meet payroll and establish a $35 million line of credit with local banks to prevent another payless payday. His action came the same day government workers got their delayed paychecks.

PROPERTY TAX FORUMS TO BE HELD

Lt. Gov. Gerard Luz James II has announced that his office will hold a series of public forums on property tax issues beginning Monday, April 12.
The Office of the Tax Assessor, under the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, is responsible for assessing all real property in the territory. Real property tax bills are issued in mid-May and become due June 30.

DONASTORG SEEKS SUPPORT FOR PSC HEARING

In a bid to convince Senate President Vargrave Richards to have the Committee of the Whole review controversial practices of the Public Services Commission, Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg is circulating a petition to his 14 colleagues seeking support for a hearing.

JUNIOR SAILORS WIN BVI REGATTA FOR ST. CROIX

Jersey Devil, skippered by 17- year-old Chris Stanton, won the 1999 BVI Spring Regatta. The overall Regatta win is the first by a St. Croix boat, and the first by a boat sailed entirely by juniors.

V.I. ARTISTS SHOWCASED AT VISITOR'S CENTER

Some of the best vistas to be seen on St. Thomas are no farther away than the air-conditioned comfort of the Tourism Bureau's Visitor Center across from Vendors Plaza. Its current art show, titled "Seen in the VI," includes oils by Mercedes Berruz, batiks by Doreen Walsh and prints by Clifton Berry, Corinne Van Rensselaer and Kat Sowa.

United Airlines' entry into the Virgin Islands travel market will be officially announced at a Government House press conference Wednesday afternoon.

SONIA JACOBS DOW NAMED LABOR COMMISSIONER

Gov. Charles W. Turnbull completed his Cabinet nominations Monday with the choice of Sonia Jacobs Dow of St. Croix to be Labor commissioner. In addition to sending her name to the Legislature for confirmation, Turnbull named Dow acting commissioner.

CHAMBER HONORS 8 FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Coral World was magically transformed into an elegant outdoor "festival of lights" Saturday night, as the four owners of St. Thomas's newest tourist attraction were honored, along with four other individuals, by the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the community.

WALLACE TWINS NAMED PRINCE AND PRINCESS

For perhaps the first time in Carnival history, a set of twins was named Prince and Princess of Carnival ‘99. The sister and brother, 9-year-olds Sayeeda and Steadson Wallace, were crowned Sunday night during the Carnival Prince and Princess competition at Lionel Roberts Stadium.

LOCAL MUSEUM FEATURED IN PBS SERIES

St. Thomas is going to be featured, and a little local museum is going to be highlighted, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, when PBS television presents "Travels in Mexico and the Caribbean," narrated by Sheri Belafonte, daughter of Harry Belafonte.
