Man Killed in Officer Involved Shooting on St. Thomas

A man was shot and killed by Virgin Islands police early Sunday after officers responded to a burglary call in Frenchman’s Bay, St. Thomas, according to a statement from the Virgin Islands Police Department.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Central Dispatch received a report from a female resident stating that a burglary was in progress at her home. Responding officers encountered a male suspect on the property. During the encounter, at least one officer fired a department-issued weapon, striking the suspect, police said.

Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and provided aid. Despite life-saving efforts, the suspect died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m. by EMS personnel, according to the release.

Family members identified the man as 36-year-old Tyler Simpson of Woodinville, Washington.


Police said the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in keeping with department policy while the shooting remains under investigation.

“The Virgin Islands Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Tyler Simpson. This is a difficult time for everyone involved,” the department said in its statement.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available, according to the release.

Editor’s Note: Police initially said shooting victim Tyler Simpson was from Seattle, Washington. His family has since clarified that he was from Woodinsville, Washington.
