The Virgin Islands Education Department has announced the 2025 District Teacher of the Year recipients, honoring two educators who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their students and school communities.
Cherise C. Davis, a 3rd-grade teacher at Juanita Gardine PreK-8 School, was named the St. Croix District Teacher of the Year, while Cornell Hanley, a Special Education teacher at Yvonne E. Milliner Bowsky Elementary School, earned the distinction for the St. Thomas-St. John district, according to the press release.

The surprise announcement, which took place during special ceremonies in each district, highlighted the outstanding contributions of both educators. VIDE Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington praised their achievements, stating, “Today, we are not just recognizing two outstanding educators, but we are celebrating the unwavering dedication and passion they bring to our classrooms and communities. Ms. Davis and Mr. Hanley exemplify the values that make our schools and communities stronger, and we are immensely proud of their achievements.”
Davis, an 11-year veteran of teaching and a proud graduate of the Virgin Islands public school system, discovered her passion for education during her high school years at St. Croix Educational Complex. She has spent her career inspiring curiosity and critical thinking in her students. Beyond her classroom, Davis is a committed community leader, contributing to school committees, leading a Girl Scout troop, and organizing events like Virgin Islands History Month and Red Ribbon Week, the press release stated.
St. Croix District Insular Superintendent Dr. Sharlene Belton-Gonzalez praised Davis, saying, “Ms. Davis represents the heart of what it means to be an educator. Her passion for her students and commitment to excellence shine through in everything she does.”
Hanley, who has dedicated more than 20 years to teaching, serves as the St. Thomas-St. John District’s only Adaptive Physical Education teacher. He works with students across multiple grade levels, focusing on those with physical disabilities. Known for his leadership and dedication, Hanley also organizes extracurricular activities, mentors aspiring educators, and contributes to the community through initiatives such as the Special Olympics. His efforts have extended to coaching, where he led Bowsky Elementary’s boys’ basketball team to a championship, the release stated.

“Mr. Hanley’s dedication to his students and his willingness to support the broader school community exemplify the kind of educator we strive to honor. He is an inspiration to us all,” said St. Thomas-St. John District Insular Superintendent Dr. Stefan Jürgen.
The VIDE congratulates Davis and Hanley, whose commitment to fostering academic achievement and community engagement embodies the best of the Virgin Islands education system, the release stated.
