Bureau of Internal Revenue Extends Hours for Filing of Tax Returns

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue reminds the public that the deadline for filing the 2009 individual income tax returns with the bureau is Thursday, April 15, 2010. Taxpayers cannot file their returns using the e-filing option, according to a press release from BIR Director Claudette Watson-Anderson.

BIR’s offices on all three islands will have extended hours for the convenience of the taxpayers for the week of April 15.
On St. Croix, the extended office hours will be:
Monday, April 12 through Wednesday, April 14 from 7a.m. to 7p.m., and on Thursday, April 15 from 7a.m. to 9 p.m.
On St. John, the extended office hours will be:
Monday, April 12 through Wednesday, April 14 from 7a.m. to 7p.m, and on
Thursday, April 15 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
On St. Thomas, the extended hours and locations will be:
Mandela Circle office in the Cinema One Building: Monday through Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Thursday, April 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In addition, the following additional locations will be open to accept the filing of tax returns without payment on St. Thomas: Crown Bay Mall: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Tutu Park Mall (Center Court) from 10 a.m.to 7 p.m.
Taxpayers who are unable to file their 2009 returns by the April 15 due date are reminded that they must properly estimate the tax due and file a valid extension on Form 4868 by April 15. The extension is only for filing the return. Taxpayers who owe must pay the tax due on April 15 to avoid the failure to pay penalty.
Questions about the extended office hours should be directed to Tamarah Parson-Smalls at 715-1040, ext. 2248.
