CASA, VIVA Tennis Tournament Planned

May 1, 2008 – VIVA for Children is holding its second annual tennis tournament at the Buccaneer Hotel Tennis Club from Wednesday, May 21 through Sunday May 25. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the children being served by the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Homework Helpers programs at Virgin Islands Volunteer Advocates for Children (VIVA). To register, call Don DeWilde at 773-3036 or by e-mailing him at ddewild@attglobal.net. The deadline is Sunday, May 18.
Matches will be played in Men's Doubles A and B; Women's Doubles A, B, and C; and Mixed Doubles A and B. They will be played after 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, and all day on Saturday and Sunday.
The trophy ceremony for players and sponsors will be held at 6 p.m., on Sunday, May 25, at Buccaneer.
Committee members, Magda Finch, Susan Armstrong, Sharon Paulus, Karen Heckman, Don deWilde (tennis pro at Buccaneer) and Sean Coursey (event sponsor –Clinical Laboratories) invite all tennis players to join the tournament.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a national network of programs that give children an advocate to speak up on their behalf in court and in the foster care system.
Homework Helpers is a program developed to raise the self esteem of V.I. children by helping them to be more successful in school. They are providing 1:1 help to these children to do their homework, and while doing it, to reinforce basic reading and math skills. The goals of the organization are to improve academic performance, and help children develop better self esteem and a love for learning. Close monitoring and collaboration with classroom teachers are key to the success of this program.
