SEWAGE FLOWS BY TERRITORIAL COURT, ONTO BEACH

June 4, 2002 – The collapse of a sewer line near the Territorial Court building and adjacent to Centerline Road resulted in the discharge of raw sewage at the site, while sewage also was being discharged onto Campo Rico beach and into the water there, a release from the Planning and Natural Resources Department Tuesday afternoon stated.
The Campo Rico situation prompted DPNR officials to advise the public to avoid swimming, bathing or fishing in the water there "until the problems are corrected and the public health concern has been alleviated."
The collapsed sewer line "is causing the discharge of raw sewage along the southern side of Centerline Road, just west of the Territorial Court," the release stated. It said the additional discharge of raw sewage by the Public Works Department's Campo Rico pump station "is ultimately discharging onto the Campo Rico beach and into the adjacent waters."
The release also said people should "avoid areas of storm water runoff, such as guts, puddles and drainage basins" in the affected areas because of possible contamination.
And it said the DPNR Division of Environmental Protection was continuing "to monitor the discharge of raw sewage in the vicinity of the Territorial Court and the Campo Rico pump station."
