Thompson, King Take Firsts in STAR's 5-K Run

Oct. 3, 2004 – Today's 5-kilometer Founders' Day run organized by the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners produced no course records and featured no T-shirts, but reflected the spirit of the original race in 1982. Runners and walkers got out early to exert themselves over the 3.1-mile course for the simple enjoyment of it.
First place overall was taken by Bill Thompson in a time of 18:43. He was followed by Robert Bowen (20:01) and Brad Kappel (22:31). Melissa King took the women's race in 24:09. Kristin Barton finished second in 24:32 and Simone Francis took third in 24:33. Walkers Pat Allen and Fay Hsu finished comfortably in 42:53.
For the moment, course records remain with the University of the Virgin Islands' Ethan Kreul, who ran 16:08.91 in 2004, and Regina Radazza of St. John, who posted 19:00 in 2002. The appearance of Novella Harrison and Juliet Smith, members of UVI's fledgling cross-country team, suggests we may see more fast UVI runners later in the season.
STAR's next event is the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" two-miler on Oct. 17 (5:30 p.m. at Port of Sale Mall) and the 22nd Annual V.I. 10-K (6.2 miles) on Nov. 14.
