Serafin Rodriguez Sr. Dies at 72

Serafin Rodriguez Sr.

Serafin Rodriguez Sr., also known as “Kadafi” or “Rafy,” died on Mar. 2 at the blessed age of 72.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Aida Maria Gonzalez-Rodriguez and Jose Rodriguez-Ventura; siblings: Providencia Sanes, Luz Maria (Lucy), Maria (Mery), Mercedes and Gloria Rodriguez; and grandson: John Lewis (Lil John) Royer Jr.

Serafin is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Ruby Huggins-Rodriguez;  daughters: Judy Rodriguez, Jeanene Rodriguez-Gibson, Josolyn Maribel Elizabeth Rodriguez and Sherreen Aida Maria Rodriguez; sons: James Alfred (Bling Bling) Rodriguez Sr. and Serafin Rafael (Rafy) Rodriguez Jr.; brothers: Jose, Juanito and Angel Rodriguez; sister: Sylvia Rivera; grandchildren: Syeda Rodriguez, Winston Harry Jr., Johnalyse Rodriguez-Royer, Jamal Rodriguez-Francis, Shakidha John-Baptiste, Dimitrius and  Mackaveli Gibson, Jeaneva, James Jr., Angello, Jah’Malik, Zaya and A’Mora Rodriguez, Isiah Henderson, Serafin lll, Safari, Athena and Savion Rodriguez, Emmanuel and Ezekiel Soogrim, Senaya and Senyra Stapleton, Shekiera Lewis, Jerbari Evans; great-grandchildren: Thymothy Rodriguez, Sanaa Barbel, Jamalys and Jahrielys Rodriguez-Francis, Kareem Jr. and Finesse J’Adore Hughes, Aliyanah, Adriana and Ailani Harry.

He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Francisco Encarnacion Sr., Jesus Felipe Quinones Sr., Jose Quinones, Fe Robles, Andres Sanes Sr., Felix Ortiz, Gladys, Miguel, Wilfredo (Freddy), Jose (Junito) Luiz and Carmen (Carmencita) Perez, Orisa Mathieu, Khary Bentick, Nidia Millette, Eartha Degannes, Ferron and Kareem Bentick, Maury Cassimeer Sr., Margaret Durand, Juliette Cassimeer, Leslie Murray Jr., Albert Murray, Rud Mark, David, Joseph and Rene Barnes, Zoraida Knight, Pedro and Miguel Belardo, Jose (AJ), Carlos (Carlito) and Luis (Felle) Martinez, Jose Luis, Milagrito, Jesus (Paieto), Kira Maria, Anthony and Joyce Angela Rodriguez, Anna Ambrose, Usha Rodriguez-Parker, Asha, Joey and Susan Rodriguez, Lucecita Roper, Juanito Jr. and Iris Rodriguez, Eliezer and Miguel Rivera, Sylvia Rivera-Parris and Elizabeth Gabriel, Jaydesha and Jamison (Jamal) Carobert.

Other beloved survivors include his daughters-in-law: Uma M. Desir-Rodriguez and Angelina Robin-Rodriguez; sons-in-law: Avalton Gibson and Jenard Evans; brother-in-law, Benjamin Huggins; sisters-in-law: Carmen Burns, Diane and Carol Huggins, and Elizabeth Carobert; godchildren: Daejon Liburd, Makir Thomas, Jovan Drummond and J’Nae Torres-Lang; very special family and dearest friends: Cristel Rodriguez, Cristeen Rodriguez-Cox, Daphne McIntosh-Rodriguez and the entire McIntosh family, Giselle Quinones, Agnes Williams, the Christopher, Ventura, Schneider, Farrelly and Felix families, the Ballantine family, the Garcia family, the Prevost family, the Burns family, the Huggins family, the Thomas Bakery family, the Encarnacion family, the Serrano family, the Edwards family, the Powell family, the Evans family, the Liburd family, the Stiggers family, Ernie Drummond and the Drummond family, Shirley Chapman-Lewis, Alberto (Bongol) and Liza Perez, Jesus Alex Torres, Nolly and Enid Lettsome, Morland (Boy Blue) Folkes, Dudley and Sonia Martina, Jermaine (Feelo) Philomen, Paul (Ranks) Thomas, Egbert (Eddie) Hall, Veronica Ortiz, Archile Barbel, Positive Nelson, Gerard Luz James II, Austin Andre, Milton Jackson, Shawnda and Travis Brown, Petra and Kirk Sam, Herman Heywood, Johnson Carobert, Jacqueline (Jackie) Hill, Lornette and Jarl Pemberton, the Calquohoun Community, St. Croix Central High School Class of 1980, Dr. Arakere Prasad, Dr. Brian Bacot, Maritza DeCosta, Naiema Durand and the staff at VI Continuum Care, Alice Henry and the staff at Department of Human Services Meals on Wheels, Dr. Babu Subramaniam, Dr. Emmanuel Graham, and the staff and doctors at Juan F. Luis Hospital; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

A viewing will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Friday, March 31, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Private cremation and burial will follow.

The family of Serafin invites all attendees to wear his favorite colors of red and black.
