UPDATED: Swift Arrest Made in the Paradise Mills Homicide Thanks to Community

A suspect allegedly involved in the murder of Deshawn Huggins was arrested and charged Friday, according to the V.I. Police Department.

Jahreem Lake, 28, was arrested and charged with murder in the 1st degree, the report stated.

Lake’s bail was set at $1,000,000. He was unable to post bail and was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing on Monday, police said.

Oct. 1, 12.09 p.m.

A gunman is still at large from a shooting that occurred on St. Croix Friday, police said.

VIPD and emergency responders were dispatched to Paradise Mills Housing Community after concerned citizens reported shots fired to 911. Upon arrival, they found a Black male in dark clothing and a dark stocking cap on his head lying face down in the grass. The victim was identified by his next of kin as 31-year-old Deshawn Huggins.

EMTs applied life-saving services and transported him to JFL, where he was pronounced dead by the ER physician. He sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Huggins’s death is the 21st homicide on St. Croix in 2022, according to the Source Homicide List. The territory has a total of 28 homicides this year.
