The VA Caribbean Healthcare System encourages all veterans to seek help, as part of the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month events.

“Our veterans are leaders and resilient, but everyone needs assistance at some point. Either to speak with peers, receive clinic support, counseling or something else, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System is here to help,” said Rosa I. Gonzalez-Santos, Suicide Prevention Program coordinator.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide represents an important challenge to public health in the United States and the world.

“Suicide is preventable, and we all can help. Making a phone call, sending a text message or requesting the specialized resources that the VA Caribbean Healthcare System offers through the phone line 787-622-4822 or 1-866-712-4822. This phone line is managed by health care professionals, who are ready to provide assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Gonzalez-Santos.

As part the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month events, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System will offer virtual workshops to veterans and family members related to mental health.

“Suicide is not exclusive to veterans. Any person that does not receives proper assistance immediately could be at risk. The longer we wait to search for help, the longer will be the recuperation,” said Gonzalez-Santos.

With an operational budget of approximately $600 million, the VA Caribbean Health System is a system of care for veterans, consisting of a tertiary care medical center located in San Juan, Puerto Rico and 10 outpatient clinics located throughout Puerto Rico (Arecibo, Ceiba, Comerio, Guayama Mayaguez, Ponce, Utuado, Vieques) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix and St. Thomas).
