Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett issued this statement on the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse:

“Today we learned of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse. I share my deep condolences with their families and to the people of Haiti.

“President Moise was assassinated in his home at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning. In recent years, I have been concerned about the rise of violence and ongoing political instability in Haiti. This heinous act will further exacerbate the political crisis in the country.

“I urge a thorough and independent investigation of President Moise’s assassination, and those responsible for the assassination and attack need to be brought to justice. My team and I are closely following the events in Haiti. I stand by my colleagues in support of Haiti’s quest for democracy and peace. I am hopeful that the United States will remain close allies with the people of Haiti and help protect their democracy.”
