Luis C. Cancio, a 38-year-old resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, was extradited from the U.S. Virgin islands Thursday, Attorney General Denise George announced.
Cancio was charged with being a fugitive from justice.
According to a news release issued by the V.I. Department of Justice, Cancio had been detained April 12 by Customs and Border Patrol at the Cyril E. Airport, where he was attempting to travel to Newark, New Jersey, and arrested by the V.I. Police Department. Police said he was on parole based on his early release from prison after being convicted of second-degree manslaughter. While on parole, Cancio failed to notify Parole of his travel to the Virgin Islands, and as a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Cancio was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections without bail, pending his extradition hearing.
The V.I. Dept. of Justice, Special Investigation Division, filed a criminal complaint of extradition on April 14 and Cancio voluntarily waived extradition back to New Jersey. He was extradited Thursday morning by new jersey parole agents.
