Man on Pretrial Release Charged with Firearm Possession

A man charged in an Oct. 9 shooting incident in Frederiksted turned himself in to police on Tuesday and was named in a warrant for unauthorized possession of a firearm and also charged by the Office of Probation with contempt of court for violating terms of his release from a June 20 arrest.

According to the V.I. Police Department, 24-year-old Daniym Heywood of Ludvig E. Harrigan Court was arrested at 11:18 a.m. on Feb. 16.

In the Oct. 9 incident, Heywood was observed on a surveillance video discharging a firearm at a vehicle, after the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on him and others on King Street in Frederiksted. The incident resulted in the death of 21-year-old Kadiyen Illidge.

Heywood was not charged with Illidge’s homicide.

Bail for Heywood was set at $100,000. He was not able to post bail, and was subsequently turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending his advice of rights hearing.
