Territory Marks 12th COVID-19 Death

The Virgin Islands Department of Health on Monday announced the 12th death of a USVI resident due to COVID-19, a day after the 11th such death was confirmed.

In a news release issued Monday evening, the DOH confirmed the territory’s 12th COVID-19 death was a 72-year-old woman on St. Thomas.

While the 11th death was announced on Sunday, no details were immediately available. The department confirmed Monday that the deceased was a 92-year-old male on St. Thomas.

The two most recent fatalities bring the number of COVID deaths on St. Thomas to seven, with five taking place on St. Croix.

As of Monday night, the department reported a total of 14,667 tests, an increase of 130 since Sunday. Of those, 998 were reported as positive, an increase of 14, and 13,613 were negative, an increase of 155. The department’s website said 56 tests are still pending, a decrease of 39.

In its announcement, the Department of Health said it continues to work with other agencies in taking actions to slow the spread of COVID-19, advising residents to continue following precautionary measures: stay at home, practice social distancing, wear a mask when in the company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly and wash your hands often with soap and warm water.

To report a suspected case of COVID-19, residents are urged to call 340-712-6299 or 340-776-1519. Anyone with a medical emergency should call 911.

More information about the disease is available online at the Department of Health website.
