Morton Alberto Isaroon Dies

Morton Alberto Isaroon

Morton Alberto Isaroon was born to Percival Isaroon and Marie Perry on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Morton grew up on St. Croix with four brothers and three sisters: Monsel, Charles, Will, Clements, Elma, Cleota and Doris, who all preceded him in death.

Morton attended the Seventh-day Adventist School. As he was growing up, he would go on the small boats over to Puerto Rico, and there, he would deep sea dive for conch and lobster. He would also make his living cooking on those small boats. He loved diving so much that he packed and moved to Puerto Rico for a couple of years where he learned fluent Spanish.

When he returned to St. Croix, his parents decided to send him to New York to live with his sister Doris in Queens. Doris was working at Elmhurst Hospital and got Morton a job in housekeeping. Morton moved from Queens to the Bronx, where he resided for 50 or more years.

Morton loved to entertain, cooking being his specialty. At several events they would ask him to cook for several birthday events for the staff and co-workers.

He met Marion, who started at Elmhurst Hospital as an LPN. Soon after, he offered his hand in marriage on March 28, 1958. Morton retired as a supervisor of housekeeping after 30 years at Elmhurst. Morton’s passion for cooking not only made his peers happy but his family as well. He loved to make kalaloo, roast pork with peas and rice, boiled fish with fungi and homemade bread pudding and pound cake. Every birthday a cake was made for the family. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s were extra special because Morton did all of the cooking.

Morton was baptized shortly after his retirement and became a parishioner at St. Luke’s Church in the Bronx. Morton and Marion attended church every Sunday, where he ushered during mass. Before he would get ready to go to Sunday mass, he made sure the family had Sunday breakfast. We were so grateful. To sum it up, we cannot forget Marion and Morton’s love for cruises they took together and sometimes with family, 77 cruises in all.

He leaves behind his wife, Marion Herring, of 62 years; daughter, Joann; son-in-law, Eric Ward; granddaughters: Jerica, Jessica, Jazmin and Jaylin; great-granddaughters: Jayla, Jahnai (he called her Pancake) and Saiya; sisters-in-law: Ann Isaroon (Fla.) and Juliette Isaroon (St. Croix); as well as a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, distant cousins, friends and neighbors.

Morton, “Norton” as they called him in the neighborhood, was loved by all and will truly be missed.
