Acting on information received from the public, officers of the V.I. Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau, along with other local and federal law enforcement agencies, conducted an operation in the Bovoni Housing Community, where they found a weapon stashed in a vacant apartment.
Gun violence is a problem in our community, the police news release said, and information led the team to search vacant apartments for evidence of illegal activity in the Bovoni Housing Community. The police found an assault rifle that was hidden in one of the vacant apartments. The weapon was collected and photographed for evidentiary value and a ballistics test will be conducted to determine if the ballistic signature of this firearm is tied to any of the recent shootings or acts of reckless endangerment in the territory.
St. Thomas District Police Chief Ludrick Thomas thanked the community for supporting law enforcement as they conducted the search. He urged anyone with information about the discovered firearm to contact 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 or Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-8477. Crime Stoppers is an anonymous service and information that results in the resolution of a case may qualify the tipster to a cash reward.
