The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA or Authority) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that a fire was reported at 2:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 5, at the Anguilla Landfill.

The Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS) was immediately on the scene along with VIWMA contractors and staff. VIFS has brought in additional equipment to control the fire.

The fire is located on the southeast corner of the landfill and is under close supervision by the VIFS and other safety personnel.  Landfill operations have been suspended until further notice for the safety of the haulers and residents using the facility.

The VIWMA continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates on any changes that may affect public health and the environment.
