Central Students Learn About Hispanic Culture Through Mask-Making

Students and teachers who took part in the “Masks and Bigheads” workshop.

From Oct. 3-10, students enrolled in St. Croix Central High School’s foreign languages and fine arts programs enjoyed participating in the “Masks and Bigheads” workshop by Puerto Rican artist Kenneth Meléndez as part of the school’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and in recognition of V.I., P.R. Friendship Day.

Students created artwork while learning about the Hispanic culture, particularly that of Puerto Rico.

“It was a great experience for students, and the program covered aspects of regional culture and art as an extracurricular activity,” explained Eli Torres, CHS Spanish teacher. “The participation of the selected students was thorough, and they exhibited excellent behavior.”

The students’ artwork is currently on display at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in Frederiksted, where they will remain for two months. The afterschool program was in collaboration with Torres and art teacher Niarus Benjamin-Walker.

“Thanks to Principal Yves Abraham for giving us the opportunity,” Torres said. “This program was also attended by four adults who acted as chaperones and benefited greatly by engaging in art making.”
