VITEMA Asks Residents to Participate in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency

Are you registered to join the nation and the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) during the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill at 9 a.m., Oct. 17? Will employees, family members and children know what to do in the event of an earthquake?

As of today, only 349 participants are registered in the V.I. In the wake of the increased earthquake activities affecting the region, which includes the magnitude 6.0 quake experienced in Puerto Rico on Sept. 23, VITEMA encourages all residents, schools, hospitals, businesses and communities to actively participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill scheduled for Oct. 17. Residents can register their organization’s participation at www.shakeout.org/register/ today.

Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover and Hold On drill? Earthquakes can happen at any time. To react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down – or drops something on you. Practicing helps people to be ready to respond.

VITEMA looks forward to seeing residents join in during this important preparedness event across the territory. Feel free to take pictures of your organization, agency, department, business, school or community participation in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill and share them with us at:

Unlike many news organizations, we haven't put up a paywall - we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. Our sites are more popular than ever, but advertising revenues are falling - so you can see why we could use your help. Our independent journalism costs time, money and hard work to keep you informed, but we do it because we believe that it matters. If everybody who appreciates our reporting efforts were to help fund it for as little as $1, our future would be much more secure. Thanks in advance for your support!
