A 24-year-old Haitian man died Sunday night when the car he was riding flipped over on St, Thomas’s east end, the V.I. Police Department reported.
Police did not release the name of the victim Monday, pending notification of next of kin.
According to police, at 11:22 p.m. Sunday officers of the VIPD Traffic Bureau and Forensic Units responded to a 911 call of a car crash on Brookman Road east of the laundromat area on St. Thomas’ east end.
Deputy Chief of Police David Cannonier arrived on the scene along with other members of the VIPD and saw a late model Mitsubishi Montero flipped on its roof with an occupant pinned inside. The pinned individual was pronounced dead on the scene.
the police report said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control while trying to negotiate a deep corner turn on Brookman Road. The victim was a passenger in the vehicle along with two other occupants.
Police later discovered the other two occupants. One of them had walked to a house in the Nadir area and the other occupant traveled to the hospital seeking treatment. Their injuries were not life threatening.
“It is important that we obey all traffic laws, especially when it comes to our speed limits,” Cannonier said, “We need the community to come forward and assist us in avoiding and solving such incidents.”
