USVI Soccer Association National Women U-17 Team Prepares for Tournaments

U.S. Virgin Islands Women Under-17 National Soccer team has been selected

The USVI Soccer Association (USVISA) has selected the U.S. Virgin Islands Women Under 17 National Soccer Team and has planned upcoming events pertaining to the team’s preparations. Barbados, along with Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Belize, will host 21 young women and staff from the USVI at the Wildey Astro Turf Stadium in Wildey, Barbados, in what should be a very exciting Group C. There has been a slight revision to the initial selection list. Monique Arthurton, who plays defense, will replace Anapia Brunt, also a defensive player.

Prior to arriving in Barbados, the delegation will depart the territory on Friday, Aug. 16, for Antigua, British West Indies. While in Antigua, the USVI U17 Women will participate in two pre-tournament warm up matches with the Antigua and Barbuda U17 Women’s Team.

USVISA has been preparing this national team to participate in the CONCACAF 2019 Women’s U17 Qualifying Tournament for several months, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The qualifying phase will feature four groups of four teams in round-robin format, with the winner of each group advancing to the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship. Match days are Wednesday, Aug. 21; Friday, Aug. 23; and Sunday, Aug. 25.

Group A will take place at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, Honduras; it will feature host Honduras, Saint Lucia, Anguilla and Bonaire. The Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Cayman Islands, will be the site of the Group B matches, featuring Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Martinique. Group D will be hosted by Curacao and feature Bahamas, Guyana and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, playing their matches at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Willemstad, Curacao.

USVISA will host youth as well as adult tournaments of this nature at its Bethlehem Soccer Complex location on St. Croix. The facility was officially opened by the FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani on Sunday, Aug. 11, when they visited the complex.

Having these young women from our community participate in this CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament for the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s U17 Championship is one of the initiatives of the USVI Soccer Association to continue to provide opportunities for young people to train and excel at the game of soccer. The coaching and technical staff has picked the most dedicated, skilled and committed young women.
