Public Works Ramps Up Territory-wide Ghut Cleaning Efforts

Annual ghut cleaning efforts are underway.

The Department of Public Works began ramping up its annual ghut cleaning efforts in recent weeks. Just last week, the ghut located between Bellows International and the VITRAN Bus Depot was cleared. Before and after photos show the level of dirt and debris that accumulated in that particular ghut.

“As we prepare for hurricane season, we want to ensure that these areas are cleaned to facilitate clear passageways and minimize flooding,” said Commissioner Nelson Petty Jr.

On St. Croix, of the total 26 ghuts, 13 have been cleared, seven are in progress and six are scheduled to begin on June 27. On St. Thomas, of the 28 ghuts, 15 are clear, four are in progress and eight are scheduled to be cleared this week. On St. John, all ghuts have been cleared.

Ghuts are cleared and maintained in accordance with DPNR guidelines.

The Department of Public Works has also partnered with the V.I. Waste Management Authority to address ghuts that have been affected by sewage. Ghuts are cleared and maintained in accordance with the guidelines stipulated by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
