Five-Year-Old Girl Killed in Two-Car Accident

A two-car collision Sunday evening on St. Croix took the life of five-year-old Penelope Tutein, the V.I. Police reported.

The accident took place at about 7:33 p.m. on Peter’s Rest Road, west of Cool Out Bar in Estate Peter’s Rest.

According to the VIPD, a 4-door, gray, Dodge Durango operated by 28-year-old woman was heading east on Peter’s Rest Road and a brown Chevy S-10 pickup truck driven by a 43-year- old man was heading west.

The Chevy S-10 merged into the eastbound lane, police said, causing a head-on collision.
The Dodge Durango flipped twice and stopped on its left side, causing the two minor passengers in the back seat to be partially ejected.

Citizens on the scene helped push the vehicle off both minors and removed them from under the vehicle.

The Durango had a total of four occupants, including the driver. There were no passengers in the Chevy pickup. Both drivers and all passengers were transported to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

Five-year-old Penelope Tutein, who was in the Durango, died of her injures at about 1:33 a.m. Monday at hospital.

This case is still open pending further investigation by Traffic Bureau Division.
