An alert circulating on a social media application warning of a threat to the territory is a hoax, the V.I. Police Department reported Wednesday.
According to the VIPD, a WhatsApp voice message purports to warn of a threat to the USVI in the coming months. The FBI has responded that there is “no evidence to substantiate that threat or to support any other terrorist threats to the territory,” the police said.
WhatsApp is cross-platform voice-over-internet service owned by Facebook. It allows the sending of text messages as well as voice and video calls, and the sharing of images and other media and documents.
“’Hoax threats’ are not a joke and they have devastating consequences to both the public and the perpetrators,” the police said in its news release, adding that issuing this type of text over social media, via text message, or through email is a federal crime.
The VIPD said it is working with federal law enforcement agencies to track down the source of the hoax threat.
