Seaborne Airlines reported Wednesday that it is making “a significant investment and commitment” to the Caribbean and U.S. Virgin Islands by adding more than 240 percent more capacity, including as many as 29 more weekly departures, almost 1,000 additional seats.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Seaborne said beginning Thursday the following routes have been increased from twice daily to three times daily:

– San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) – St. Thomas Cyril E. King Airport (STT)

– San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport – St. Croix Harry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX)

– St. Thomas Cyril E. King Airport – St. Croix Harry E. Rohlsen Airport.

On Jan. 8, Seaborne’s service between San Juan and St. Croix will increase from three to five daily flights, the airline said.

In addition, Seaborne said it will add a second seaplane to its operation.

“As part of the new Silver/Seaborne operation, we are committed to growing our operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands and providing our customers with safe, reliable and friendly service,” said Seaborne Airlines CEO Steve Rossum.

Beverly Nicholson-Doty, the outgoing commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, thanked the airline for meeting the needs of the territory.

“The demand for both leisure as well as business travel to St. Croix in the months ahead justifies the addition of air seats and we would like to thank Seaborne for its partnership and commitment to our territory,” she said.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company’s Executive Director Carla Campos welcomed the increased services between the U.S. Territories as she underscored the ties between Puerto Ricans and Virgin Islanders.

“Puerto Rico connects most of the Caribbean to the continental U.S.,” Campos said. “Seaborne’s increased capacity to St. Croix and Santiago, Dominican Republic, is a testament to the fact that leisure and corporate travelers are looking to explore the wonderful attractions and shopping opportunities in our destination.”

In the Wednesday news release Seaborne said it is is working with airline partner JetBlue to accommodate passengers previously booked on JetBlue flights that are being discontinued.

Also this week, Seaborne announced it is returning to the Dominican Republic with nonstop service between San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and the Dominican Republic’s Cibao International Airport starting Feb. 14. The initial service will operate three days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and will increase to daily service May 23 through Sept. 3.

New schedules can be viewed and reservations made online Seaborne’s website.
