There Was Less Trash, More Running at the Annual CoastWeeks Beach Relay

Brice Richards of Good Hope Country Day School competes at CoastWeeks Beach Relay

Brice Richards of Good Hope Country Day School (GHCDS) had a dual purpose in mind while running in the annual V.I.Pace Runners CoastWeeks Beach Relay on a humid Saturday morning. Joining his partner Michal Dizon-Bauman, also of GHCDS, in the 2 x 2-mile relay race on St. Croix’s Ha’ Penny Beach, their team, Fresh, took first place with a time of 27:18. Mission one accomplished.

Also, Richards has made a science project out of researching the best technique for running a race on the beach. There was a good deal of data to collect from his own experience as well as that of other runners in the race. Mission two accomplished.

Kaedon Gleason and Mason Lambert of GHCDS finished second 28:35; Michelle Smith and Randle Nielsen of St. Croix Track Club finished third in a close 28:49; Kirra Lambert and Savanah Logan finished fourth in 40:01; Miko Dizon-Bauman and Cooper Crowther of team Fastish finished fifth in 40:57; Megan Russell and Brooke Meyers of team Right Meow finished sixth in 41:51; Robin Stern and Kyle Fleming of team The Pattern is the Pattern finished seventh in 47:34.

Notes:
1] This annual event for years has been a cooperative activity between the University of the Virgin Islands V.I. Marine Advisory Service, V.I. Waste Management Authority and Ocean Conservancy. It is organized by the V.I.Pace Runners and sanctioned by the V.I. Track and Field Federation (VITFF).
2] Organizers recall the first year for this event when two pickup truck loads of trash were picked up in the area. That has reduced over the years to just a couple of small garbage bags on this Saturday.
3] The event is free to the public with awards to top teams; in exchange participants are asked to pick up trash.
The next event on the V.I.Pace Runners Calendar is the annual West Indies Lab 5-Mile at 6 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13. It will start at the Yacht Club on East End Road, head west and finish in Green Key.
