The U.S. Virgin Islands Congress of Parents, Teachers and Students Association (USVI PTSA) is calling all parents of children in the public schools to organize and register as local PTA units in affiliation with the National PTA, the largest child advocacy organization in the nation.
With the longstanding challenges in education and the many issues that threaten the welfare of public school students, parents must be the loudest voice advocating on behalf of their children, whose future is being negatively impacted by issues that continue to plague the educational system, such as low teacher salaries; under staffing, including teachers and nurses; lack of equipment and supplies; substandard curriculum; unsafe air and poor water quality due to mold and other contamination; non-routine maintenance contributing to compromised and condemned infrastructure; and unsafe school environments with construction debris on site.
The school system lost so much in the 2017-2018 school term after experiencing Irma and Maria. Now it has everything to gain, and it is only through an organized effort that parents can affect the greatest change in the downward spiral of education in the territory. As parents, it is a responsibility to be the first educational leaders, speaking for every child with one voice.
The USVI PTSA stands ready to fulfill its obligation to the community by providing parents with the training, guidance, resources and support in their endeavors to organize as affiliated PTAs/PTSAs. Parents territory-wide who are committed to the children and interested in being a part of PTA should join their local unit or contact the USVI PTSA at 220-1872 or 277-9392 to establish a charter. This is a call for Parent Activation for Education!
