Are You Eligible For a Takata Settlement Check?

On the heels of announcing that local residents are eligible for a $200 settlement payment for the manufacturing, sale and installation of faulty Takata airbags, the Attorney General’s office encouraged consumers to follow four steps to determine whether they are entitled to a check.

Takata, which filed for bankruptcy last year following a string of lawsuits tied to its airbags, has agreed to pay the U.S. Virgin Islands $1.5 million – $500,000 of which will be paid to 2,500 consumers with older vehicles equipped with the company’s airbags.

If you own any of the vehicles listed below and can verify your license plate number, you are eligible to pick up a check:

Checks can be picked up at:

– The St. John Legislature Annex Building from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13.

– St. Croix’s Canegata Ballpark between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 14 and 15.

– The Attorney General’s Office at the GERS Complex on St. Thomas between 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 18 and 19.

Those seeking a check must bring their registrations and V.I. drivers licenses. Consumers whose cars could still be on the recall list should visit www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/takata-recall-spotlight or contact their vehicle dealers.

Consumers whose vehicles are under recall should make an appointment immediately with their dealers to get their Takata airbags replaced for free.
