V.I. Cycling Federation Releases Results of Triple Bypass Road Race

Top finishers of the Expert race: Morgan Theophane (2nd place), Mario Peters (1st place), Juancito Gario (3rd place)

On Sunday, May 20, cyclists in the V.I. Cycling Federation’s (VICF) Triple Bypass Road Race took on a 12-mile loop that presented challenging climbs and fierce headwinds throughout. The race started and finished at the former Cafe Kaleidoscope on St. Croix’s South Side Road, climbed Lowry Hill, then up the Christiansted Bypass to Beeston Hill, where it then picked up South Side Road.

Four riders in the Elite group stuck together and rode a steady pace for their first two laps.  Scott “Moose” Marusa decided it wasn’t fast enough, so he dropped the rest of the field and finished the 36-mile race almost 4 minutes ahead of second place finisher Glenn “Hula” Massiah in a time of 2:00:12.  Joey Swanson was third in 2:06:32.

The Expert group also rode together for the first lap of their two-lap race.  Mario Peters and Morgan Theophane advanced a bit and crossed the line in first and second position in a time of 1:24:28, with former Elite rider, Juancito Gario, just a minute behind in third place.

Scott Marusa, winner of the Elite category

The Sport race was a little less cohesive because they were completing only one lap.  Each cyclist rode to his/her own ability for the 12-mile challenge, which brought James Meyers and Olani Vanterpool together at the finish line. James out rode Olani by one second and finished in 44:12. Hubert Bartlett was third.
